Hello everyone,
I'm new to this lark but wondered if rather than calling the ICB for advice anyone could advise on the availability of college based courses for the Self Assessment Level III. I have been told that some areas run a one day course for this but I can't find anything to confirm this. If anyone has done this I'd be glad of some advice. ie location / costs etc.

Hi

If it's any help, I used the book that is sold here in the shop. I found it very detailed and informative and it got me through the exam (2nd attempt).

The only drawback to this rather than doing a course, was that there was no tutor to help solve any problems, but I'm sure you could ask here on the forums.

Helped keep my costs down.

Do you want to sell your book, David?
Trying to keep costs down too.

Hi

course size and technicality of the course is massive to cover in one day... even if someone cover in one day its hard to understand in one day or maybe in one week..

well I have done the Tax upto corporate level as chartered accountant but i was wondering David or someone who actually have read the books or done the self assessment exams can advice me if i do without ICB books I mean is there anything about bookkeeper in the exam to be examine ie bookkeepers responsibilities etc or its just a standard self assessment exam.

Thanks

Thanks for advice David, The only problem I find with studying alone is that work always seems to take precedence! I find it very hard to be disciplined enough to say 'no' to work for a day while I study whereas if I'm booked into a course I will have to attend. For the record any ideas approx. as to how many study hours involved in the book?

Now I'm confused! I though David was talking about the ICB book?

Thanks for your response. I agree, a day would hardly be sufficient! I have looked at the ICB book and it looks very good. The format is far better than the study material I have used previously.

You may be able to do the exam withouth the book. What the book covers is everything you need to know about calculating the sections for the manual self assessment tax return forms, SA100; SA101; etc. It is is two sections covering personal taxation and business taxation - and shows you how to calculate things like all your income before and after tax to benefits in kind, etc,

Hi Jules
I was talking about the book that the ICB sell. It is very well laid out and concise and covers every calculation you may need. It is split into two sections personal and business, and guides you through each and every part with tests at the end of each section so you can assess your own progress.

As for how long it takes to study, it depends how quickly you pick things up. I went through it in a couple of weeks I think. Theres is no time limit though, just the standard 14 days to submit the exam paper.

Definitely buy the book - but also get copies of the various forms, leaflets and books from HMRC as there is more detailed information on there. I don't know if you can still get paper copies or whether you have to download them. I think they don't like sending out paper copies anymore.

Agreed, they don't like sending paper copies out, but all the self assessment forms are downloadable. You need to download and print them out for the exam anyhow.

Julie,

What might help you is a HMRC workshop run on 1 day basis. You will need to call them and enquire when the Self assessment, Business expenses and capital allowance are scheduled.  They are
free of charge and are run in various areas, depending on your post code. I attended one myself and it helped!

The phone number is 0845 603 2691.

Good Luck,

Thank you very much for that. I had forgotten that many years ago I attended several courses run by HMRC and they are excellent in content. They also gave lots of back up material covering topics discussed, and as you say they are free so we should take advantage, and who better to discuss with than HMRC Smile
