VAT

If VAT is not mentioned on an invoice but the company is VAT registered do I presume that I need to deduct it from the total cost or the fact that it is not mentioned means that none was charged?

Hi Hazel,

You can not amend an invoice received as it represent a legal document.

You will need to get in touch with whoever has issued it addressing the problem should there be any. Ideally the invoice should be credited in full and re-issued correctly considering the company is vat registered and the service or product charged is within the VAT scope.

What is the invoice for?

Kind Regards,

Hi Nathalie

It was for the disposal of an asset for a fixed amount and the purchase of an asset, in both cases a motor vehicle. I went back to my study books and all the examples show how to dispose of an asset but don't include any VAT. When I sat the Level 3 Manual exam, the disposal question didn't include VAT either.

HI All

FYI

Modified VAT invoices

If you sell goods or services for more than £250 including VAT, and your customer agrees, you may issue a modified VAT invoice showing the VAT-inclusive value of each standard-rated or reduced rate item.

As taken from HMRC website.

Whilst it is always a good idea to show the Net, VAT and Gross as you will see above you can just show the Gross as long as you include your VAT number on the invoice.

With the Disposal of Assets there are a few exceptions where the Disposal may be outside the scope of VAT and no VAT is charged, however I would speak to the person who issued the invoice to ensure this is not the case.

I would then put it through the book and work the VAT out myself.

Above is a link to the HMRC site that gives you all the detailed info on what is legally required on an invoice.

I hope this helps

Stuart
