I have a client who has asked me to make payments on their behalf throught their bank. I don't feel comfortable doing this, Is there anything thing that says I can't do it?

Hi Janet

Are they making you a signatory of their bank account or giving you access to their online banking? I ahve had clients who didn't want to officially make me a signatory but wanted me to manage their bank accounts online using their own logon. I refused and said I wasn't comfortable doing this as I was not an employee of their company and they were not creating a new logon for me but expecting me to use their existing one.

If you're not comfortable with it I'd just tell them that... or are they likely to be a bit funny about it?

Hi Clare

Yes they are wanting me to use thier login details but also to do banking over the phone as if I was the owner (which I have refused to do) To be honest I am not worried if they are going to be funny about it I'm more concerned with keeping myself right.

Many Thanks
Janet

You might want to confirm this with the helpline but I was in a similar situation around a year ago.

The advice I was given was to make sure you have permission in writing to do this and added it to my letter of engagement. Like you and Clare I was extremely reluctanct to do this but had to offer it as part of a payroll services to Disabled clients.

Hi Clare - just a bit to add to Tony's advice of a letter.  Ask them for a seperate 'log in' and seperate passwords for telephone banking, otherwise point blank refuse.  This is so that in the event of monies missing you have your own back-up.

Good luck

I've got log ins for a couple of my clients, it's very annoying having a growing number of bank security devices!

I don't know about this, but I think there might be an option with some banks for a non signatory to set up payments for a signatory to then go in and action them. Maybe it's worth seeing if anything like that is an option?

I've got the log in for my brothers' company. I think at the time it was set up it meant I could then pay whoever and whenever I wanted. I made them well aware of this and its implications. I still get them to sign a sheet of paper with whatever I am paying for my own piece of mind. It's makes things a lot easier for both of us as I can see the bank statement at any time.

The security settings have changed now and any new supplier needing paid requires a card put in a card reader to set up. So it means one of my brothers has to be present.

Just in case I wasn't clear, I've got log ins because I am a signatory.

Just a point on this, I carried out a credit check on myself a year or so ago and discovered that my credit record was linked to the Director of the company I used to work for as I was a signatory on the company bank account and company Secretary.  This was obviously not an ideal situation.
