Hi, I'm new here, and also new to payroll. want to get a payroll qualification. been thinking ICB and CIPP. dont know which one is the best.

Anyway, I want to study the CIPP foundation degree in payroll management next year. I know if I finish the CIPP payroll cert and pass the interview exam, I can get into their 2nd yr.

look at 2 courses, ICB consists of 2 parts, manual payroll and computerised sage 50; CIPP: manual payroll. I think I can learn more from ICB than CIPP.

If I pass the ICB payroll exam and I can become a member PM dip, but CIPP only offers certificate, not membership.

Cost: CIPP £1200, ICB £500

let alone of the study cost, just on reputation, which one is best?

Hope someone can give me some advices.

thank you.

Hi Justin,

by the sound of this, you are really serious about your payroll.  If you only want to specilise in payroll the CIPP would be the better bet as they are the payroll experts.  Remember, even the ICB get their payroll update from the CIPP:

However, if you do not want to specilase just yet, or are not 100% confident the ICB offer you more scope in terms of options as you can study the bookkeeping and tax aspects as well, so you can keep your options open.

Hope this helps

Hi Nick, thank you for your reply. I've just found out from CIPP that the ICB qualification is not accredited and formally recognised by them. I'm still waiting for their reply what action I have to take if i pass the ICB exam.

The worst case scenario  is that even I pass the ICB exam, CIPP wont allow me to take their interview(entrance) exam, I have to start from year 1(payroll degree) all over again.

I think ICB payroll diploma is better than CIPP certifcate, coz it not only learns the manual payroll, but also the sage 50, CIPP is just the theory, but I am 100% guaranteed that I will be allow to take their entrance exam after finishing their certificate course.

Which qualification is better in terms of getting a job? it will take 2-3 yrs to finish the degree, but in the mean time, I want to get a job in payroll.

Thank you.

If you pass the ICB exam i think you will still have to take the same exams as you would if you hadnt passed the ICB exam.

I agree that you must, especially after RTI, have a  computerised element and it does look like an initial oversight by the CIPP.  However, you will find that the manual aspect of the ICB is not quite as indepth as the CIPP manual. So you still have a choice to make.

As for getting employment, i think most employers will be looking for experience over qualifications with payroll, but that is just my opinion.  Obviously it is better to have qualifications than not.
