General overview of payroll process?

Hello. I'm currently studying for the Diploma in Payroll Management with Open Study College. I have some experience with the income tax system and HMRC from a previous employment, but not specifically from a payroll point of view or anything to do with NI or pensions.

To be honest I'm struggling a bit with the course. I had hoped it would fill in many of the gaps for me and improve my chances of getting employment in a payroll position. But the course materials I've been given seem to assume a lot of a lot of knowledge that I don't have - perhaps I should have started on a lower level course? I don't know. - But primarily it seems to focus on the details of specific exceptions to the assumed normal process.

It would be enormously helpful if anyone is able, to have an overview of the general work that needs to be done each month when running a payroll, - just so I'm able to get a better picture of the context for all of the exceptions without worrying that I'm missing something fundamental.

I know this is a lot to ask, so many thanks in advance for anyone who gives it a go!

Hi Mathew,

The ICB syllabus for this subject also covers a significant area of manual payroll principles, which should provide a solid underpinning knowledge and set you up nicely for moving onto and gaining the most from your computerised study. Check that your course covers the content in the following link:   http://www.bookkeepers.org.uk/Syllabuses/Level%20III%20Diploma%20in%20Payroll%20Management

Sorry, should have provided link to new syllabus:  http://www.bookkeepers.org.uk/Syllabuses/Level%20III%20Diploma%20in%20Payroll%20Management-July%202013

Kind regards

Edited to provide different syllabus link.
