Sage V Quickbooks

Anyone any advice on either product and which one is the best / most cost effective?

I am using both at the moment but there seems to be a huge disparity in cost, how the product is handled and the quality of customer service.  As quickbooks seems much cheaper, much more fluid in the use of it and the customer service seems much better how come it is much much cheaper than sage?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Karen,

I suppose the answer to this is known only by Sage.  You're right though, they tend to be more expensive.  I think it's a throwback from the years that Sage spent being the dominant software provider for accounancy in SME's.  There was no real competition for years and Sage got to price how they liked.

With the introduction of a lot more software recently Sage haven't been quick to move.  I suppose they've realised that many accountants trained on Sage products and know them.  The follow on from that is that these accountants want clients and bookkeepers to use Sage.  Many of them resell Sage so it's in their interest that their clients use it.  It also makes their life easier.

I think the problems Sage may have in the future is that they've not really kept their eye on the ball.  They were slow to move to cloud, they didn't see small upstarts challenging their dominance and by the time they realised that the tides were turning it was a bit late.

They managed (with Intuit) to get a cloud version to market, but by that time people like Xero had made their presence felt.  Xero went all out with their software partners while, by all accounts, Sage One doesn't really cut the mustard.  Some providers are now integrating with Sage, but I wonder if it's a case of too little too late, or whether they really feel that they have some right still to make the rules in UK accounting software.

As far as QuickBooks go, they were very big in the states, but only recently (probably in the last 5-7 years) started making real inroads into the UK.  Pricing was one of the things they used to get a decent market share.

QuickBooks - for me - just knows what the market wants, they have the pricing right, they have the customer service (for Partners) right, they have the product right too

On top of that, my view is this

SAGE is manual bookkeeping on a computer ....v

QuickBooks is Computerised Bookkeeping

I guess I must be bias????

I think a lot depends on what you want from the bookkeeping system and what your client wants and also what you are used to. I learnt on Sage buut them became a quickbooks proadvisor, but I think whichever you prefer is personal choice. As far as costs goes again it depends what you want. if you have 5 clients who you work for on five days a week, then if you were on the sage bookkeepers club, you wouldnt actually pay much more than for quickbooks, but on quickbooks you are basically unlimited, so if you have lots of different clients then works out much cheaper. If you go online then the cost is per client whichever cloud system you use, and some are more suited to certain clients than others.

I personally think that Sage is even though it does do some online, basically targeting the bigger client, and the bigger more tailormade client (like the big limited companies, who actually want more bespoke systems), so will charge more, whereas even though quickbooks used to, they now don't do enterprise anymore so they are targeting the smaller, the same as xero etc. A Lot is personal choice, but for the smaller companies the contest now isnt just between sage and quickbooks, their are a lot of others and all seem to target a slightly different market. Quckbooks support though is very good,

As regards which is best, i'd say go with the one that you prefer using, unless the client has other ideas.

Kind regards and very best wishes

Hello,

Xero is the best bookkeeping I have ever used. No other software can competet with them relating to quality.

I can't agree more, 5 years ago all my clients were on either Sage or QuickBooks desktop packages, now not a single one I've moved them all to Xero. Sage will be dead for small business in the next few years, their pricing structure can no longer compete. QuickBooks is OK but it's some way behind Xero. My advice would be to sign up as Xero partner, once you get 5 accounts they give you 15% discount.

Best Regards

Mike
