Brightpay or Moneysoft Payroll Manager & Payroll Charges

Hi

I have recently passed the payroll exam and am currently trialling Brightpay & Moneysoft payroll manager with a view to offering payroll as a service to several of my existing clients.  I shall be taking over the payroll from their accountants who use Iris, mid tax year so would appreciate any comments regarding ease of transferring year to date data from Iris to either of these software providers. Also any other comments regarding ease of use of either of these payroll providers would be appreciated.

My other dilemma is charging, my clients accountants charge by the payslip is this the usual way to charge?  I can see this gives more flexibility. Could anyone give me advice please on the normal level of charging?

Hi

About the fees i personally think that you should judge it according to the bussines and the time you spent to run the payroll eg if they have a stable team with fixed salaries or they are paying per hour which changes every month. Also the number of employees etc.

I dont like the charging per payslip system.

I don't have experience of Brightpay, but have used Moneysoft payroll for the past couple of years and I have found it to be good value, easy to use and it does everything I've needed to do, so can highly recommend that.

In terms of charging, I do charge by the number of payslips, but my clients are mainly very small. I charge a fee for the first employee (most only have one) and then half that rate for additional employees. I have a client whose business is very seasonal, so it works, as he can have between about 4 and 12 employees to pay, depending on the time of year. I also sort out any issues that may arise with HMRC without charging extra, so clients do feel they are not just being charged every time they do anything.

Hope this helps Smile

Hi

Although I have passes my payroll exams I decided not to run my own payroll but do run an accountants two major payroll's.  Used to be on Sage but has now gone over to Brightpay.  I had previous use of Moneysoft and think between the two if I was to run my own i'd go for Brightpay.  Regards what you charge the client it depends if you charge hourly or fixed fee.  If you already charge them a fixed fee then I would increase thye monthly fee to take it into account.  If you normally charge them hourly then I would do a per employee charge.  Some poeple will do 1-5 employeed at x rate etc.

Thankyou Bedo, Alison & Liz for your comments.

Regarding the charging I can see it is down to personal preference really so I have decided to charge by the payslip and have included a fixed monthly admin fee for auto enrolment duties.  My clients are familiar with being charged this way and I hope I can offer them a significant saving on what their accountants are currently charging.

I am still undecided on which payroll software but am slightly favouring Moneysoft at the moment as it looks the cheaper option and is relatively straight forward to use.  BrightPay does look good from an auto enrolment point of view though which might be helpful to me as I am new to pensions so may be worth the extra cost. Decisions, decisions!!!

Kind regards

Hi What payroll software are you using for the rest of  the clients? I am not sure about the free software but maybe try the HMRC one I have never used it though. I know that if you have other clients moneysoft is a cheaper than Brightpay. I would personally recomend that they purchase software for the payroll.

Hi Alison,

The free software is ok at a very basic level and usually limit the number of employees you can have. HMRC have a list of the free providers at https://www.gov.uk/payroll-software/free-software   Brightpay no longer has a free option.

Without knowing more about your client you are also likely to need to process pension information too which you should bear in mind when you select the software to use. Think about calculations, submission files, statutory communications etc.

Also, I notice you don't have PM.Dip showing.  If you haven't got this, then you will not be able to offer payroll services under your practice licence.  Your only option then would be to complete the qualification or sub-contract to someone else who is able to offer it.

Hope that helps, or, feel free to get in touch.
