Hi, 

I have a very difficult and unpleasant client and I feel our working relationship has broken down and I would like to give him a month's notice.

However, my concern is not getting paid for the work I will do during the notice period (he has a track record of not paying people), any ideas, I don't really want to go down the route of planning for future court action?

Hi,

If your letter of engagement says you wll give a month's notice I don't see you have much choice.  My suggestions are that in that letter you could say, your month's notice is dependent on a certain amount being paid upfront or maybe if you have submissions such as VAT return that you say in your disengagement letter that the final submissions are only made once the balance due has been cleared.  Whatever you do remind him of payment terms in the letter and be really clear on your expectations.

 Thanks very much for your reply Lucy, I agree not much more that I can do but at least I can concentrate more on other clients now,
