I worked for a private bank for a decade. I then had a fantastic opportunity to run an office in the Cayman Islands, helping people find work in the Caribbean.
Unfortunately, I was unable to get an extension to my visa and so returned to the UK.
I needed to get a job quickly and was offered a chauffeuring position. I'd always loved driving and it seemed like an ideal job to take temporarily while I looked for a better position back in administration.
I did enjoy chauffeuring, I was able to make a decent living and ended up doing it for just a little longer than what might be considered "temporarily" - about 12 years longer!
In recent years though, the industry has become very competitive and that, coupled with rising petrol prices (just my luck that as soon as I quit, petrol prices came tumbling down again!) meant I was working longer and longer hours and making less and less money.
I needed to make a change and bookkeeping seemed the perfect fit for me. I've always been good with figures and with my experience in banking, where many of my daily duties were bookkeeping-related, I knew this would be a good career choice.
I'm now an AICB, with a diploma in SAT.
