There are so many different ways of working it out that I suggest you just discuss it with HR and come to some agreement.
The simplest method of working out gross pay is an hourly rate and then the problem should be easy but some companies pay a set monthly salary and then overtime on a simple hourly basis. Doing it this way where the gross pay is made up of two figures can create different opinions so I would just try to come to some agreement. However the HR may have been told by their manager or 'head office' that it must be done in a certain way.
