Vat on online business purchased

Hi,

Please could you let me know if I am able to use an order confirmation, which includes the Vat amount but does not show the supplier's Vat number, as basis for claiming Input Vat? My clients increasingly go the online route for their supplies and obtaining Vat invoices from some suppliers is proving quite difficult.

Thank you,

Agata

Hello

Sorry but the answer is no. If you don't have a valid vat invoice you cannot reclaim the VAT. Retailers are allowed to issue less detailed vat invoices for up to £250, they don't have to give the name of the customer or the amount of VAT charged, but they must include the suppliers name and address and vat number

It can help your clients to remind them that suppliers are required by law to provide VAT invoices on request - i.e. they should not feel at all reticent about demanding those documents. If there are suppliers they deal with regularly, they might discuss the situation with that supplier so that they are provided with the documents that they need without your customer needing to chase every single time. It benefits the supplier as well as your customer, as less of everybody's time is taken and better procedures are followed.

A tactic that worked with one of my clients is that I added up for them how much they were losing in a quarter by not obtaining the proper VAT receipts. It added up to hundreds of pounds! They became more efficient with their paperwork after that...

Thank you very much. It is pretty much what I expected.

Those are very good tips, I'll pass them on to my clients.

There are occasions, such as when buying items off ebay/amazon, that if a seller is a member of the Global VAT scheme (second hand margin scheme) that the receipt MAY include VAT but not be shown as a breakdown. If this is the case, the invoice MUST have the words on that they are part of the global VAT scheme.

Amazon quotes this on their http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201238260 page.........

Invoices for items that are subject to the Margin Scheme for second-hand goods won't show a VAT breakdown, and the invoice will state that the item is subject to the Margin Scheme for second-hand goods. For more information on this scheme, please refer to “The VAT Margin Scheme and global accounting HMRC Notice 718 (April 2011)”.

When this is the case, the VAT IS claimable - Hope this helps.
