Quickbooks Desktop and Quickbooks OnLine

Hi Everyone,

This is probably a stupid question, but could someone who's done Quickbooks Desktop and Quickbooks OnLine tell me if there is much difference in doing the general tasks such as recording purchases, sales expenses etc? I got my pro-advisor in On line but I didn't do the desktop because I couldn't afford it at the time.

I ask because I have the chance of taking on a client who has several limited companies. He has an accountant to finalise the accounts so all I'd have to do is the monthly figures and he said I could use his quickbooks but he's got quickbooks desktop.

Thanks very much

Hi Caz

Best of luck with your new client.

Yes Desktop and the online versions are very different, but having said that the 2015 edition is going towards the online. The on-line versions tend to equate to the desktop (simple start now being online), pro etc. Which quickbooks desktop has your client got?

Go for it Caz you will be fine, and you can always become a desktop proadvisor if you want to, so that you have access to both supports. Your client may decide to take it online equally anyway. Just make sure that whichever system he uses, you have your own login, separate from the accountant etc to cover your own back (unless you are the only other person using it), If you have never used the desktop version, why not download a trail so you can see whats different?

Very best of luck

Thanks very much Lainy. My client has got the 2015 or at least he said he had the most recent version. I will download the trial version that's a good idea. Thanks for your other advice.

Hi Lainy or any other Quickbooks Desktop ProAdvisors

I can't find a link to download a trial version. I found one for QB Desktop 2011 but the download didn't work. Have I missed it somewhere or is it no longer possible to download a trial version for QB Desktop?

Thanks

Caz

Hi Caz

Every download of the desktop version allows you to use it for so many transactions - I can't remember whether it's 30 days or 30 transactions now, but once downloaded and you begin using it, it will come up saying that you have 'so long' left to use it without registering.

Although the 2 versions look very different, behind the scenes they're much the same, just different terminology - i.e. items in the Desktop version is products and services in the Online version..........Expense in the Online version is 'Write Cheques' in the Desktop and so on......if you've got used to the general concept of QuickBooks (as opposed to something like SAGE) then you'll be fine picking up using the Desktop version after being used to the Online version.

 Hi Carol,

Thanks very much. I had another attempt at downloading the 2011 version - it's less up to date than my client's got but at least I can get a general idea. I've found it seems to be more or less the same principle as the on line one but it does look different like you say. Thanks for your help.

 Hi Lady of Ledger,

Thanks very much, it took a couple of attempts [which is why I didn't reply sooner] but it has now worked and now I've been able to have a little practice before I do any work for the company. It's 30 days so I've got a while to get more used to it.

Thanks very much
