Parking Charges - VAT

Hi All,

Does Pay and Display parking charges incur VAT?  I Have a receipt from parking with Shropshire Council.  There is a VAT no, but from what I can tell online, you can't claim back.  However, the advice seems to be mixed.  Does anyone know what to do in this matter?

Thanks, Emily

Hi Emily

If the parking ticket receipt has a VAT number on it - you are safe to assume that there is VAT in the charge. For example, all NCP car parking tickets have this, so VAT can be reclaimed on those - smaller private car parks may not be VAT registered, in which case you wouldn't be able to claim - but the VAT no being on the ticket or not should be a clear indicator.

What makes you think you can't claim it?

 Hi All,

Would just like to add that any parking tickets that you would get from a parking meter in the street that are charged by councils are Exempt for VAT. But any private car parks, such as Carol mentioned NCP Parking, you would need to check the ticket for a VAT Number.

 Hi Meena,

I've always assumed that if the council put a vat number on the parking ticket then this indicates that vat has been charged?  Is there specific legislation that says it's exempt and if so could you point me in the right direction please.

many thanks

> Hi Graham,

After doing a lot of research, I found that on-street parking will have no VAT on them, as I originally thought.

Off-street parking will depend, as a rule of thumb, if the ticket has a VAT number on it then I think it would be safe to assume you can claim back the VAT. I do believe councils also have to charge VAT on their off-street parking otherwise it would be unfair to other off-street parking providers.

I've found a lot of sources that state this but none that actually state which piece of legislation governs this. I will continue to research this and see if I can find the actual notice/legislation and post here if I find it.

Hope this helps

Hi Lady M,

thinking about it, the times I've had a ticket with a VAT number on have all been for council car parks, thus off street parking.  Hadn't though before that there would be a diference between on and off street parking.  I shall bear your comments in mind for the future!
