On Wednesday 3 July, the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Organised Crime Unit (ROCU) will present bookkeepers from the region with insight on what fraud and money-laundering looks like and how they can identify suspicious transactions.

The presentation will open up a day-long seminar, being held at the Met Hotel in Leeds, which looks at the obvious challenges facing bookkeepers, but also explores some of the game-changing opportunities that are opening up to professional bookkeepers over the next couple of years, and how to grasp them.

“This seminar is a must for all bookkeepers and will demonstrate that money laundering and fraud can no longer be treated as just something that affects others”, says Garry Carter, Director of Compliance at the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB)

“The threat is real and can affect bookkeepers in many different ways”, continued Carter.  “ROCU will explain what this looks like in reality, rather than in attention-grabbing headlines about Banking and £multi-million cases, and bookkeepers will see at firsthand what it might look like to them in their everyday work”.

During the day, speakers will explain how to identify risk and how to carry out proper due diligence that will reduce the possibility that they will become unwilling professional enablers of financial crime.

The day will also include a presentation from a leading cyber security expert on the rapidly emerging cyber threats that can affect anyone, not just big firms and hospitals.

But much of the day will be about new opportunities.  Three of the UK’s leading bookkeeping and accounting software companies, Sage, IRIS and Apron, will demonstrate how bookkeepers can harness the power of digital and AI to attract more clients and help them provide clients with more opportunities to improve their client offering and grow their businesses.

The Leeds seminar is organised by the ICB as part of its nationwide Inspire Tour, and is open to members and non-members.  Further information can be found at: https://www.bookkeeperssummit.com/inspiretour
