HMRC’s design team are conducting and collating ‘user experience research’ to identify a name for the Business As Usual (BAU) service.

HMRC are introducing Making Tax Digital from April 2026 for taxpayers with qualifying income from self-employment and property.

Before this becomes business as usual (BAU), HMRC have requested input into renaming what is is currently referred to as 'MTD ITSA'. HMRC’s design team are conducting and collating ‘user experience research’ to pick a new name for it. The remit is to suggest a name that is meaningful to customers and their agents.

If you are an agent and would like to contribute your ideas, ICB supports HMRC’s request that their survey is completed which takes between 5-10 minutes.  The results will be analysed by HMRC researchers and a service name will be confirmed later this tax year.

For Bookkeepers

The survey requires you to give the following information:

  • The capacity in which you are responding (eg. bookkeeper agent)
  • The number of employees, if any, in your organisation
  • Whether you complete SA returns as part of your business

Then, simply, respond to the question ‘HMRC will have to name this way of dealing with tax. If you had to give it a name, what would you call it?

A following question indicates some terms which may help come up with a new name:

  • Landlord
  • Updates
  • Self-Assessment
  • Sole Trader
  • Quarterly
  • Income Tax
  • Making Tax Digital

The survey says that the above words may be used to create a name that would accurately reflect this way of dealing with Income Tax.
