Did you know that HMRC produces a list of deliberate tax defaulters? It makes fascinating reading – or is that just us? Each entry on the list provides the specific period of default, the business trade or occupation, an address associated with the published person at the time of the default, the total amount of tax/duty on which the penalties are based, and the total amount of penalties charged.

And some of the sums owed are eyewatering. Among the HGV drivers and dog breeders are a lot of takeaways and restaurants.

There are also accountants on the latest list updated on 14 December. One is Rowland and Co, Saxons, New Road, Ridgewood, East Sussex, which had £57,026 of tax and duty due and a total penalty charge of £29,938.59.

Andrew Accountancy Services Ltd of Robertsbridge was also on the list and charged £15,931.30 in penalties, with accountant John Clive Andrews (at the same address) charged £58,312.10 in separate penalties.

Payroll Solutions WM Ltd, formerly of Oldbury were given an outstanding penalty bill of £43,222.90, and Hartel Ltd, a B2B based consultancy, auditing, and managing supplier was ordered to pay a whopping £652,196.98 in penalties.

Well, if you are interested in some late-night reading then read the current list of deliberate tax defaulters.
