Andrew Jamieson FICB and Jill Jamieson AICB PM.Dip have been ICB members for more than a decade

How did you meet?

Andrew: We met in the 1970s through my sister, who met Jill at a youth camp. We got married in 1977 when Jill was 19 and I was 23. At the time, Jill was working as a bank clerk and I was a technical sales representative.

When did you open your practice together?

A: The bookkeeping practice started in 2006 when I was unexpectedly made redundant and Jill took a redundancy package from her employer. Within about three years, we had around 30 clients. In addition to bookkeeping, Jill became the payroll specialist in our business, and I visited our clients every month to go through their accounts. I also searched for potential new clients.

Do you work well together?

A: Yes, for the most part! We worked on one client’s premises two days a week. The office doors were generally open, and we gave great entertainment to other staff who would hear us saying, “You do it this way!”, “No you don’t, you do it this way!”. On occasion, people would put their heads around the door and say, “It’s good to see you are a normal married couple!”.

What have you been up to recently?

A: 2018 was a total change for us. We downsized our business in Cardiff and moved to Bedfordshire in order to help with childcare for our 12-month-old granddaughter. Our routine has totally changed. Mondays and Tuesdays, we are running our bookkeeping practice, Wednesdays and Thursdays we look after our granddaughter, and Fridays – recovering!

How do you usually celebrate Valentine’s Day?

A: Confession time: I’m not very good at Valentine’s Day. A few years ago, some friends shamed me into getting a Valentine's Day card – the first and only one. This year, instead of sitting in front of the TV reading the ICB newsletter on my laptop, I think I’d better up my game and treat Jill to a meal – she’s worth it. Romance is not dead for us oldies in the bookkeeping world.

Andrew and Jill will be attending the Inspire Tour together – don’t forget to book your earlybird tickets!
