Branch Chair of the recently launched ICB Hertfordshire Branch, Siân's whirlwind journey with ICB led her to launch her own practice, Pages Bookkeeping.

Siân attributes some of her enthusiasm for bookkeeping to the friendly community of ICB Bookkeepers she met at a Branch Meeting in Saffron Walden, Essex, when she was studying for her ICB exams. When this branch later dissolved, she saw an opportunity to give back to the community and decided to volunteer as Branch Chair for the newly set up Hertfordshire Branch, hoping in turn to build up her own knowledge and expand her network.Sian Arnold MICB PM.Dip headshot

Siân has been a proud holder of an ICB Practice Licence since 2013, just five months after joining ICB as a student in August the year before. Siân says she always loved numbers and finance, and worked in the banking industry for ten years before taking a break to have her two children.  As it has a tendency of doing, life threw Siân a curveball, and she trained as a beauty therapist and ran her own business for five years. This evolved into a love of bookkeeping, discovering she enjoyed keeping track of the business’s finances when she was doing her own books. This experience taught Siân how to run a small business, and she later decided to leave the beauty industry and fully commit to becoming a bookkeeper.

Siân took it upon herself to do some research online and she came across one of ICB’s Accredited Training Providers, Ideal Schools. Within a week, Siân was taking steps to really progress in bookkeeping. She passed all the ICB exams in a matter of months and credits her tutor, Brian, for preparing her in an approachable and friendly manner. The teaching at Ideal Schools enabled Siân to obtain her Practice Licence swiftly and, within a week, she had her first client. She feels confident that she also has ICB’s support and knowledge behind her, and she has not looked back since!

Siân is an active participant in ICB events and has attended the annual Bookkeepers Summit every year since 2014. ICB’s Director and Head of Technical Policy, Jacquie Mount, ran workshops over the past two Summits and Siân attended the Financial Reporting Standards 105 workshop in 2016 and the Making Tax Digital workshop in 2017. Siân says,

“Jacquie Mount is a particularly impressive representative of ICB. Her expertise and determination are second to none and I really respect Jacquie and everything she has done at the organisation.”

Five years on, Siân works as the Finance Manager for a creative agency in the healthcare industry, and has clients whom she services though her business, Pages Bookkeeping. Now that her children have gone to university, Siân has more time to herself to really focus on bookkeeping. Siân believes that her new position as Branch Chair will widen her horizons and increase her opportunities within the profession.
