ICB’s brand new Advisory Council met for the first time this week, bringing together a passionate group of members ready to shape the future of bookkeeping.
The meeting, held at ICB’s London headquarters, was chaired by Council lead Kirsty St John C.MICB PM.Dip and attended by 19 members from across the UK (and Guernsey!). The council members introduced themselves, shared their stories, and quickly found common ground in their challenges, passions and hopes for the profession.
“This group is a true reflection of our ICB community,” said Kirsty. “We’ve got sole practitioners, business owners, students, seasoned experts - it’s a mix that makes this Council representative and powerful.”
Putting Member Voices at the Heart of ICB
The Council’s role is to listen to members and help ensure ICB support reflects the real-life needs of working bookkeepers. The first meeting wasted no time, covering key topics including Making Tax Digital (MTD), pricing and practice growth, support for new members, and how to stay ahead in an ever-changing tech landscape.
There was unanimous agreement that ICB members should be recognised as MTD experts. Plans are now underway to create a dedicated MTD hub packed with clear, jargon-free resources, and practical guidance.
Helping New Bookkeepers Find Their Feet
The group had a lot to say about supporting those new to the profession. Many shared memories of how daunting it can feel in the early days of practice - and how much difference a bit of guidance and encouragement can make.
Tech, Tools and Honest Reviews
Technology was another hot topic, with a big push for more open conversations around software. Members backed the idea of more peer-led reviews and regular bulletins to keep members in the loop on updates and changes.
There was also real curiosity about AI and how it could support everyday practice – along with concerns regarding data privacy.
Looking Ahead
The Council received a behind-the-scenes update on plans for the ICB Bookkeepers Summit 2025 to be held in November in London. The group had plenty of ideas to make this year’s event more inclusive, fun and member-focused.
This first meeting marks the beginning of what promises to be a meaningful and collaborative chapter for ICB and its members. The Council meets again in July, and its members are already rolling up their sleeves to get started on a long list of exciting projects.
