Within the ‘Use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax’ guidance, on 02 April 2026 HMRC added a page ‘Help and support’. This includes places to go for guidance other than HMRC and is split into two sections:

Help and support for the 2026/27 tax year

This is for designed for sole traders, landlords, and agents that explains what you need to do from signing up to submitting the first tax return using the service.

If You Started Using MTD IT before April 2026

If the agent or client signed up to test MTD IT for either 2024/25 or 2025/26, support from HMRC’s dedicated customer support team. This telephone number is in HMRC’s letter you received confirming you’d signed up. 

This section details that the team can help with the following:

  • Income and expenses to include in quarterly updates;
  • Support with submitting the 2025/26 tax return;
  • Payments and refunds;
  • Deadlines;
  • Penalties;
  • Reporting errors in calculations, statements, and payments resulting from submissions; and
  • Self-Assessment and Capital Gains Tax, including the years before you or your client started using MTD ITSA

Note that the team cannot help with the tax year 2026/27 and later tax years.  Only the tax year 2025/26 and before.
