ICB Payroll Expert Ian Holloway ponders the importance of National Payroll Week – and why payroll deserves to be recognised all year round.

Every year around the start of September, payroll functions celebrate their role in National Payroll Week with events and celebrations of all kinds.  It is the opportunity to showcase this vital profession that, operates behind the scenes but is essential to keep the country running.

For bookkeepers, the week is the chance to say to the worldpayroll is more complex than you think considering that we take all the following in our stride, and more:

  • The calculation of gross pay with the right statutory deductions, all the way down to net pay;
  • Submitting this information to HMRC via Real Time Information return – accurately and on time!
  • The production of employee payslips and the necessary accounting reports; and
  • Hands on support for clients

Plus, all of this is done using our software skills, complying with the legislation in place at the time, within the boundaries of HMRC’s guidance, rules and regulations, never forgetting that each client is unique!

In fact, there is a lot for bookkeepers to shout about in this annual fandango.

But is once a year enough?

Why only once a yearBookkeepers use their skills 52 weeks of the year and, similarly, celebrating how good we are at our jobs is a year-round activity. ICB payroll agents are supported with a library of online resources, monthly updates with Wages Wednesday and annual events such as the Bookkeepers Summit. They are supported to pay people on time, accurately and compliantly without the need for a seven-day payroll wingding.

So, whilst I encourage bookkeepers to recognise their role and their huge talents at keeping the UK paid, let us continue to focus on delivering for our clients and demonstrate what makes bookkeepers unique:

  • We can communicate effectively (and without AI);
  • We treat each client with respect, recognising them as individuals
  • We can do payroll and all the tasks necessary to get an employee paid – but we do more than this and all without celebration
  • We demonstrate ethics and professionalism in everything we do and… as ICB bookkeepers, we are supported all the way!
