The National Living and Minimum Wage rates increase for pay reference periods that start on and after 01‌‌‌ April‌‌‌ 2024.

The National Living Wage will be extended to workers aged 21 and over, a change from the current position which is for age 23 and over.

HMRC communicated to employers on 06 March 2023 indicating a range of resources that are available.  ICB wants to highlight these:

  • Check the rates on Gov.UK
  • Make sure you identify the workers that are due the new rate
  • Together with clients, update payroll and communicate the changes to workers as soon as possible
  • Contact Acas to get advice and support on paying workers correctly
  • Look at National Minimum Wage guidance to view practical calculation advice

For Bookkeepers

This is useful information, however, HMRC are also holding ‘Getting ready for the National Minimum Wage increase’ webinars on the following dates:

  • 07 March 2024 between 2pm and 3pm
  • 13 March 2024 between 1.30pm and 2.30pm
  • 14 March 2024 between 1.30pm and 2.30pm

There will be HMRC representatives on hand to respond to queries but all require registration. ICB advises bookkeepers do this, even if they are unable to attend as you will be sent a link to the recording afterwards.
