New short course helps bookkeepers use AI with confidence and maintain professional standards
ICB has launched a new short course designed to help bookkeepers and payroll professionals use artificial intelligence safely and confidently in their day-to-day work.
The launch comes at a time when AI is already embedded in practice. ICB’s latest State of the Nation Survey found that 54% of bookkeepers are using AI tools, rising to 80% when those actively exploring the technology are included.
Many are using AI to support routine tasks, but without clear guidance this brings risks, including data protection concerns, errors and questions around professional responsibility. ICB’s new Level 1 course has been created to address that gap, and is the foundation of a broader AI qualification that will be rolled out over the next 12 months.
Delivered as flexible, on-demand learning, the course focuses on practical application rather than theory. It covers how AI can support bookkeeping and payroll work, what information can and cannot be shared, and how to sense-check outputs before using them in client work. ICB has built its reputation on producing work-ready professionals, and this course continues that approach by giving learners tools they can apply immediately while reinforcing the importance of accountability and trust.
The timing reflects both opportunity and pressure across the profession. One in three bookkeepers (33%) say understanding and adopting new technology is one of their biggest challenges in 2026. As businesses adopt new tools, bookkeepers are expected to keep pace while continuing to safeguard sensitive financial information. This course is designed to help them stay relevant, confident and in control as the role evolves.
ICB members benefit from discounted pricing, with the course available at £249 compared to £299 for non-members.
Ami Copeland, CEO of ICB, said:
“As AI is now part of everyday working life, bookkeepers need to be able to cut through the hype and understand how to protect themselves and the businesses they serve. ICB’s new AI qualifications are designed to build AI capability as part of a bigger journey; supporting bookkeepers to progress into more strategic, analytical and advisory roles.
“This launch reflects what ICB has always stood for. We prepare people for real work. These qualifications help bookkeepers build the modern skills they need now: not just to keep up with technology, but to apply it with judgement and professional integrity.”
The course is aimed at those in the early to intermediate stages of their careers, including new entrants and those returning to practice. It is available via the ICB shop.
