Generative AI is changing how learners prepare for assessment within professional qualifications. It is also making it easier to produce convincing work that does not demonstrate genuine competence. ICB Head of Learning Vanessa Aradia explains how ICB is managing assessments in the AI era.
Assessment has always depended on more than whether an answer is technically correct. A professional qualification must provide reliable evidence that the person receiving it has the knowledge, judgement and practical capability it certifies.
Generative AI weakens traditional assumptions about authorship. It can produce polished answers, substantially rewrite a learner’s work, invent plausible workplace examples and make protected assessment content easier to reproduce. The result can appear credible even when the learner cannot explain it.
The challenge is that not every use of AI is dishonest. These tools can support understanding, research, revision and clearer writing. The risk arises when AI replaces the learner’s thinking, disguises the origin of an answer, fabricates evidence or circumvents assessment controls.
In bookkeeping and payroll, that distinction is critical. Accuracy, confidentiality and professional accountability underpin the trust placed in qualified practitioners by employers, clients and the public.
ICB has introduced an AI use policy across its apprenticeship and qualification pathways. AI may support learning and preparation, but it must not generate assessment answers or replace professional judgement. Protected assessment materials, client information and workplace data must not be entered into public AI tools.
Learners must declare permitted AI use and remain responsible for everything they submit. They must be able to explain and defend their work without AI assistance. Misuse will be treated as malpractice.
As AI capability develops, assessment security must develop with it. Clear expectations, secure processes and robust authenticity checks protect honest learners and preserve the value of ICB qualifications.
Qualifications underpin the trust placed in your professional work. When studying, use AI to support understanding and revision, not to produce answers. Protect assessment content and confidential data, declare permitted use and ensure every submission reflects your own knowledge and judgement.
