ICB has accredited a new payroll qualification developed with ICS Learn and Sage, bringing together learning, software and professional recognition to support anyone starting a career in payroll, or looking to build confidence in their existing skills.

The programme combines flexible online learning with hands-on experience using Sage payroll software, alongside an ICB-accredited qualification. The result is a practical, confidence-building route into payroll, whether you are just starting out or looking to strengthen and formalise the skills you already have.

ICB accreditation means the qualification meets the high standards expected of ICB programmes, giving learners reassurance that what they are studying is relevant, up to date and aligned with real-world practice.

Importantly, the opportunity does not stop at qualification. On successful completion of the Level 3 programme, students can apply to become ICB Payroll Agents and apply for an ICB Practice Licence, opening the door to offering payroll services professionally and even setting up their own business.

For ICB, this reflects the growing importance of payroll across the profession. With 63% of practising members already delivering payroll services, demand continues to rise as businesses look for trusted, capable professionals to support them.

Ami Copeland, CEO of ICB, said:

“Payroll is already a core part of what many bookkeepers do, and its importance is only growing as businesses look for trusted advisers to take on more responsibility. We are delighted to see this programme bring together learning, software and professional accreditation in a way that truly reflects how payroll works in practice. It is a fantastic opportunity for anyone looking to build confidence and develop real, career-ready skills.”

Danielle Smith, Head of Accountancy and Finance Qualifications at ICS Learn, said:

“The challenge facing the profession is not access to content. It is how effectively learning translates into real capability. By bringing learning, software and accreditation together into one connected experience, we give learners the opportunity to build confidence through application from day one.”

As payroll continues to evolve, with increasing regulatory complexity and rising expectations from employers, ICB will continue to support members with practical guidance, training and professional recognition to help them deliver payroll services accurately and confidently.
