ICB has expanded its exemptions route to make it easier for experienced payroll professionals to become members using their existing qualifications or work experience.

The new payroll exemption route mirrors the structure already in place for bookkeeping professionals, while recognising the specialist knowledge and compliance responsibilities involved in payroll work.

Applicants can now join ICB based on either:

  • Two consecutive years of end-to-end payroll experience within the last five years

  • Relevant payroll qualifications, including recognised payroll apprenticeships and professional payroll certifications

Depending on their route to membership, some applicants may also complete the Level 3 Payroll Skills Appraisal to demonstrate their knowledge and competence. Areas assessed include RTI, pensions, statutory payments, gross-to-net calculations and payroll compliance.

The expansion reflects the growing demand for skilled payroll professionals and gives experienced practitioners a clearer route to professional recognition through ICB membership.

Ami Copeland, CEO of Institute of Certified Bookkeepers, said:

“Payroll professionals play a vital role in supporting businesses and employees, often working in a fast-moving and highly regulated environment. Expanding our exemptions route recognises the experience and expertise many payroll professionals already have and provides a more accessible route into ICB membership.

We want talented people working in payroll to feel recognised, supported and part of a professional community that understands the value of the work they do.”

The payroll exemptions route is an extension of ICB’s existing bookkeeping exemptions process and includes tailored criteria specifically for payroll professionals. The application fee is £299 and applications are assessed individually.
